The Pledge of Allegiance
first appeared in 1892 in a magazine called “Youth’s
Companion”. The magazine was selling
US Flags to schools at cost as part of
a promotion to boost circulation. The Pledge
was written so that the students could
conduct a ceremony to honor the 400th anniversary
of Columbus’s discovery of America
with the US flag as its focus.
